NOW THIS WOULD BE A DISCUSSION OF WHO HAS THE BEST WET WEATHER..... GEAR ,,, Steven of course has several versions SO HE would be hard to beat ,,,,,,

Here we are shooting in the rain again ,,,,,,, but will it hold and stay wet ,,, I have been caught before ,,,,,,, starting wet and ending up dry ,,,,,,,, WET DOWNS ETC Blah blah ,,,,,

ITLOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT STAY WET TO SHOOT ,,,, fingers crossed ,,,again .

OH OH we dont need dry Humour guys ,,,,, The rain looks like stopping now ,,,,,

Yes it has stopped ......... Just finishing in time ,,,,,, PPPHHHEEEWWWWWWWW

After a Quick lunchtime Location Recce we are off to the Oyster Bar Scene

We Have a Scene in front of a Underlit Ice & Oysters ,,,,,,, It was so long ago when I recced this Location originally with Robert then With Dick ,,,,,,,, I think there was some clever plan of doing a oyster ice glowing lighting the actors at the Bar ,,,,,,, We are pushed for time here so I try something I dont normally do I hung a Kino up in front of the scene and rolled out a large piece of 216 diffusion to make a very soft light ,,,, Thinking that shooting along the bar as overs would be nicly lit and reverses would also be lit as well ,,,,,, possible at the same time ,,,,,,,

It didnt work out that way after the block through ,,,, so everybody got soft light ,,,

But the Oysters look good and I was hanging out for a taste after wrap ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I think Dick was looking at the Oysters here as well ,,, he he

Because of the Glowing ice ,,, I could get away with the Flatter frontal light ,,, I told myself that anyway ,,, he he he ,,

Dick is definitely looking at those oysters ,,,,,,,,,

This was more the over angle that the lighting was looking for ,,,,, But everyone played there dialogue forward ,,, SO ,,,

Here we are with two cameras working hard ,,, or is it jus one working twice as hard ,,,,,

Now the Barmaid sees someone interesting ,,, in the Background tables ,,,,,

Is it the Bad guys having Dinner ,,,,,,,,, OR !

Some Weird Guy who keeps stalking us on every location ,,,,,, Who is that guy ,,,, I saw him once wearing a Hospital gown in a supermarket location ,,,,,, you have to be carefull these days ,,,,, I better get security to check himout .

We finish the evening with a pre conceived getting drunk scene ,, with tracking through out of focus glass ware ,,,,,,, Sort of a Commercial shot I have done many times in the past ,,, Andy so knidly suggested that I should get on the camera and do it myself ,,,, Which I did to save time ,,,,, We were getting a bit of pressure to finish ,,,,,,, So we cleaned it up and wrapped it ,,,, DAMMMMM I did forget about the oysters ,,,,, But the ice was melting and I thought it might be better to give them a miss ,,, he he he 4 more days to go ,,, no time to get Food Poisoning.

6 DAYS to GO ,,,,, Day the Last week . At least the rain will take my mind off the Fogged film

I Just wish I could spend more time here in the Tent with Dick ,,,,,,, It does look cosy in there ,,,,, But Dick cant really spend to much of his time in there as he has to be out there in the rain with us most of the time ,,,,, How else will he try out his new wet weather gear ,,,,,, Although Steven has the best wet weather gear ,,,,,,,,, Just ask him ,,,,,,,,, he he he

Lets try a block through in the rain first ,,,,,,

Maybe even a line up and rehearsal in the rain ...

Or even a shoot in the rain ,,,,,,, Funny how there wasn't a shelter here on the Location Scout ,,,,, Another David Chapman brainwave ,,,,,,

When it starts to get wetter and Darker and you have a second scene to do ,,,,, You have to get creative

The Day Light really started to drop in level as we started the second scene ,,,,,,, I went to my scrip to see if a dusk to evening scene would work in the story line ,, Not really but almost ,,,,, So an Almost scene was good enough ,,,,, I just had to get out of this Rain ,,,,,, Please

Here Jerry is in the Dark ,,,,,, More in the Dark than usual ,,, he he ,,,,,, But as you see he has his owne light and a plastic wrapped mike as well ,,,,,,,

These guys are so used to the Halifax WET weather ,,, I almost think they like it ,,,,,,

Still getting darker and darker ,,,,,,

Sort of an "Almost" scene in the time sense of the film ,,,,,,, but it worked ,,,,, I would have loved a Big practicle light to sit on top of the low powered one in the background ,,, beggars cant be choosiers

ALL FINISHED ,,,,,,,, NOW OF TO JAIL AT THE STUDIO ,,,,,,

My GOD the OVERKEEPER ,,,,,,, I would try to never do a Movie without one again

The beauty of the overkeeper is that the operator can correct any masking or missing foreground without any fuss ,,,,,, Very valuable for an A & B camera set up ,,,,,, saves time saves Money ,,,,, Time is Money ,,, he he he .

The Rain has made us late and there is a Big Push to Finish this JAIL scene in Quicktime so we got an early start for tomorrows distant location

Now ,,,, This Jail set was originally designed as a two part sequence by Robert ,,,,, combining two 360* tracking shots ,,,,,, One exterior underneath the Bridge and the other a Jail set on stage ,,,,, David Chapman and worked hard designing set pieces that flew up like theatre walls and I had worked out a lighting gig to make it look interesting ,,,, it was never going to be easy but I think we were all looking forwad to the challenge ,,,,,,

Without Robert at the helm ,,, The sequence was little understood and was put in the to hard basket ,,, So it just became a normal Jail set ,,,,,,,,,,

I had not seen this simplified set and we had arrived late from our very wet exterior ,,,,,, With a lot of Push Push to complete quickly .

Into this Mix came a Direct Lighting request from the Director to Light the scene with hard light & Bar shadows over the actors Positions ,,,,,,,,,,,, My first feeling was ,,,, So now I am not going to have the challenging of 360* lighting set and it is going to be replaced by a lighting style i went through when i was 12 years old ,,,,,,,,,

But all good Cinematographers must consider Direct Lighting requests from your Director ,,, So I looked at the situation ,,, The set design was not built to even use a large hard light as would be required ,,, So It would have to have some changes ,,,,,, It was not impossible but would take time and in my opinion it would not look as good as what I had planed ,,,,, and the Close up work on Tom would not look as good with a hard light with bar shadows ,,,,,,, So it was an easy decision really ....... After all my name was up on the sheet and I had the responsibility of the Look and lighting ,,,,, It would also take more time for me to fuss with that hard light ,,,

The Light was a little harder close to the bars on the reverse side due to a practicle light being used ,,,

Jail Lighting aside ,,,,, When you see a great visual Prop on a set like that old Mirror it is Hard to Resist

When I first saw the Mirror I fell in love with its optical enhancement ,,, a gem ,,,,, I didnt even ask ,,, Would there be one in the Cell ,,,,,,

It had such a patina of age to it ,,,,, I could have shot the whole scene through it ,,,

While we are on the Subject of JAIL LIGHTING

These Shots are from a Film Trailer for Promotional purposes , that I shot with a RED 1 camera just using a single Kino tube inside the bars a liner small fresnel on the left for both and one tube on a kino lining on the right of frame ,,,,,, all effective and quick ,,

A scene like this using hard light with bar shadows would only get two useable vertical shadows and would make the CU look boring and flat ,,,,,,

Also both the close ups each way were virtually lit at the same time ,,,,,,, Quick turn around and they looked moody & good ....

A Nice 2 light CU ,,,,,,, maybe a bit of Polly Filler or just see what bounces back from the foreground actors shirt or face ,,,,,,,, And if you have you Monitor set up properly you can see it all with the RED or ALEXA ,,,,,,,

Hey lets all check out a few house locations interiors in town and then go for a very long drive to a S bend Road ,,,,,,,, Great location ,,, THe Office Hated it ,,, Robert Loved it ,,, To far away... To late to change it ,,,,, Dick was just getting up to speed ,,, It was tough for him coming in at the last minute ,,,,,, Plenty more things to deal with than any Director would wish ...

So we were all happy after catching up on the locations ,,,,, Ella , Dick & Steven smiling

By the end of the day ,,,,,,, we had the editors news that he thought we would have to reshoot some shots from the scenes because they could not be cut properly ,,,,
